This week is about getting to know the festival participants better. As part of our Group Project of introducing ourselves, our prompt this week is “If you could have one magical power or super power, what would you choose and what would you use it for?” In a somewhat timely fashion, the TV series Heroes has been released on Netflix and I’ve watched a few episodes recently. The show is a cautionary tale, a reminder that power has a steep price.

The answer to this question has changed over time for me. I used to think I’d want the power to heal, but when I thought about how I’d use it and how it would impact me to have it, I think that is a power that would be soul crushing. There will always be more people in need of healing than you could ever help, even among your own family and friends. Even knowing the personal cost, it is still in my short list of magical or super powers I’d want. I would have to live with the guilt of using it very selfishly.

Flight? Maybe. Time Travel, ugh. Mind reading, definitely not. Invisibility, probably not. Precognition, also a definite no. 

I think my top desired super power would be teleportation. It has a lot of both selfish and practical uses. I’d especially love to be able to bring someone with me. I’d travel to so many places that I can only dream of visiting. I could escape from danger in the blink of an eye. I don’t think I’d turn myself into a high paid courier service, but I could charge a ton of money for the ability to provide it. Putting warmongers in time out in the middle of a swamp to consider the error of their ways, tempting. There are certainly plenty of benign or evil ways a person could use this power. For me though, it would mainly be to see the world.
